Royal Messenger

16th Century - Bronze - Benin

This fine bronze figure represents the royal messenger who carried the emplems of authority from Ife to Benin when a new King was installed.  These emblems, the Portuguese sources record, were a bronze cap, a cross, and a staff.  After performing this service,he was given a cross to wear and became a free man.
