September 27,1999. I'm very pleased to read all the comments, especially since there is now a place for them.I'm an oldtime Yoruba, or you might say one of the surviving elders.I would like to give thanks to the ancestors, the orishas, and to the elders for making all of this, Yorubas in the America, possible and thriving. Lest I get verbose, let me not forget OCHUN-LETI (Bisi Hightower) who passed on 3 months ago today, a gift the world has yet to appreciate. She encouraged me to become computer literate, and to write those memoirs of the early days of Yoruba in NYC. CE keep the faith and may orisha and Ifa continue to guide you to further good works. Since discovering this website, I have found it very interesting. Information on African traditional religion. Recently I completed a Spanish language and culture class. As usual we were to prepare a paper for the final. In this paper I discussed the contributions Africans and the African culture has on Latin America, and even in Spain. Some of the Latin students assisted in defining the African based Latin religion of Santeria. Many more African Americans should seek to know the contributions of our ancestors. Thanks for this site.

I located this web by surfing for IFA related info...I am delighted to have come across it. I have been reading almost everypage you offer. MANY THANKS> Can you please advise how to set up altar and shrines that are not so expensive and will satisfy the Orisas? I had been accessing IFAFOUNDATION.org, The spiritual connection was somehow not prevalent. Immediately with your website I felt a familiarity of spirit that was seriously lacking with the other...NOT to put them down, but it seems rather obvious that even though it has been said that IFA is not limited to race, class, etc. The Foundation referenced are wanna be's, still stealing and capitalizing. Thank you for your info. I am relatively new to IFA and have a lot to learn. There are many versions on line, Thank you for that which spiritually matches my thirst.

Iboru,Iboya,Ibochiche, I am Awo de Orumila Ogunda-Ika Omo Obatala. I found your web site last night and have been on it since. I commend you for your work and interest in our religion... IFA. I am a Babalawo in the Cuban tradition of IFA for 4 1/2 years. My message to the people that visit this site is the following. In IFA just like any other religion or organization for that matter everyone has a place. This place is determined by Orumila and the Orichas. That is to say that if your destiny is to be a priest of Shango, that is where you should be. Anyone can embrace IFA, but not everyone can be a Babalawo. Nor can everyone be a Priest of Yemaya. To find your correct path you must find a competent Babalawo. "Many are called but few are chosen" Ona Ireo

I am not Black but my blood has contents of African blood we say in Cuba " IF YOU DO NOT HAVE OF CONGO YOU HAVE OF KARABALI " speaking about different type of Arican's nationalities arrived on the country abot 1800's or before . My country was a platform to sale slaves during the colonization and our population was more than 60% blacks than other races during that proccess when chiness peoples were used as slaves and sold in Cuba . I hope some time Africa will be considered again as part of the world and his people respected as inteligents cults , religious and meritorious of peace and welfare . Only one thing I recommend to consider ; be carefull in your considerations about racism , ont fall on it. I do not beleive Europeans are going to consider an attitud rectification respect to Africa because the difference on the Economical Power but is time to create a patriotical feeling in order to raise the love for our mother land . Most people here in the United States come to the African Traditional Religions as adults. Traditionally, they have been commmunity affairs. Here we practice with other adults and form a community, but do not all live and work together or sometimes even nearby. Do any of you hav echildren involved in your ile? Are you raising your children in the tradition? How do you feel about children being initiated? I am interested in your thoughts/comments on how to pass on this knowledge to the next generation. In the Judeo and Christian traditions there is a process for training children in the tradition and teaching them the tenets or catechisms. There are alos steps which are taken according to age -- baptism, confirmation, bar mitzvah, etc. While there may have been such procedures in place historically, and may still be in Cuba and Africa, what practices do we have here?

Iboru Iboye, May the Ancestors and the Orisha continue to bless the hands of this Awo for the magnanious work that he has presented here. We should all applaud your efforts and continue to support a leader in the field of producing a positive image of what we have to offer to the world of tradition African religion. There is little doubt if the elders of Africa were on-line in some binary fashion and came across this site on the web that a level of pride could not be achieved. I only hope that you site will inspire others to work and do what is necessary to come together as a world Orisha community. If there is anyway that I can support your effort please don't tarry to contact me for I will be interested in putting up some prayers I have created in English for those who have a problem praying in Yoruba. These prayers I have written are created to keep the non-initiated interested in the worship of our Ancestors and Orisha. Let me know would you like to see them and how do I submit them. May the Irunmole and Igbamoles continue your work and give you direction.

I'm from Brasil, where I was iniciated, and since I came to the USA, I've never heard about our culture or seen anything that I could find out more about my orisha. So, I finally found right in front of me, in my computer. I want to thank to the Babalorisha for this great idea and for this wonderful site. Everything is great and there's much more for me to see yet, so I'm going to start my research, once I found this site and learn more and more. Alaafia! After doing a search, I came across this site. I find it to be informative and the type of site that I can really get into. It is what I have been looking for, basically, in a Yoruba Site. I am pretty much new to learning the ways of the Yoruba Spiritual practice. I would like to open to anyone that would like to participate in a study group here in the Richmond Area. There are many Yorubas here in the area, and there is currently a small study group going of about three of us. But if one of us can't really make it then there is no study group. I would like to have more people gathering together for spiritual upliftment using this partcular path. I have so much to share and so much that I am open to learn that it would be a waste not to get in group setting with others. Feel free to email me. Or if someone is passing through this way and would like to get in touch feel free to email me. I am also willing to do some sharing and learning through email. That would definitely be convenient*smile*. So I look forward to hearing from beautiful people that are truly on the path and willing to walk the walk as well as talk the talk If there is anyone in the Priesthood willing to help with the study group, please contact me as well...For a while it may be just a one on one, some changes have occurred in the study group...
Again, this is a wonderful site. Adupe! O dabo January

I FIND YOUR SITE TO BE MOST ENLIGHTENING AS I AM ONE OF VERY FEW PEOPLE IN THIS AREA THAT ARE INTERESTED IN RETURNING TO OUR SPIRITUAL HERITAGE. WE LIVE IN A VERY PERVERTED CITY THAT DOES ITS BEST TO DEVALUE AFRIKAN HERITAGE AND CULTURE. I WISH THAT MORE AFRIKAN PEOPLE HERE IN MOBILE, ALABAMA KNEW OF YOUR SITE SO THAT THEY TOO CAN BECOME SPIRITUALLY ENRICHED AND SO THAT THEY CAN ALSO SHAKE AND BREAK THE SPIRITUAL AND MENTAL SLAVE-CHAINS OF ISLAM AND CHRISTIANITY. I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY INITIATIONS YET BUT I TRULY HOPE TO DO SO SOON. I NOW CORRESPOND WITH BABA IFA KARADE OF ILE TAWO LONA OF ORANGE, NEW JERSEY. I TRULY BELIEVE THAT THE AFRICENTRIC WAY IS THE ONLY WAY OF BRINGING IFA BACK TO ITS LOST DESCENDANTS. PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. YOU ARE TRULY DOING THE WORK OF OLODUMARE AND THE EGUNGUN. ASE!

I heard about Oya in a song by a group of women called "Moving Breath". I knew at once that Oya the one I have been searching for. I was pleased and excited to find this website. I especially enjoyed the Yoruba history and the statement of what the Yoruba believe and reject. It sounded like what I have come to believe. I am Caucasian but must have an ancestral link somewhere to people like the Yoruba because I have had these kinds of ideas since I was a very young child.

Great site....love the music, drumming and singing! Liked the page on Oggun. When I saw your graphic of him as a knight my heart skipped a beat--because a good 10 years before I got into this religion--a 'dark' knight appeared to me during a waking vision...a few months ago when I told my padrino about the vision of this knight--he laughed and said that Oggun (can't remember the title of him as the knight) had paid me a visit. I'll share the vision with y'all--and no, I'm not writing from a mental institution. :) In the Summer of 1986 I was going through a time of major upheaval in my personal life. Because it was such a hot summer, I was sleeping on a mattress in my apt's. one air conditioned room. I had cried my eyes out and turned out the light so I could try to go to sleep. Since I was exhausted I started to doze off and then woke up suddenly because I felt this HUGE presence in the room with me and it scared me. My eyes were trying to adjust to the darkness--and as they did I looked up and saw the outline of the big black horse standing by the top edge of the mattress with this great big knight in silver armor. The horse had like a royal coat of arms on and the knight had a large sword in one hand and a shield in the other. I was scared out of my mind because I was awake and actually seeing this. I wanted to turn on the light, but was too scared to move. Now--this knight did not speak to me audibly--but I could 'feel' his words. I asked him outloud "Who are you?" He said he was the 'dark knight' and for me not to be afraid that he was with me to protect me and had always been with me and always would be. After this the horse with the knight vanished from sight. But I felt alot calmer. Throughout my life at different times I have been in several near death situations from which I've always been saved at the last moment. In three separate incidents I was in danger of being shot with a gun and was told that I would be killed. In each case--it didn't happen because either something changed the perpertrators mind or I was able to talk my way out of danger. Now I realize that Oggun, along with Eleggua have been protecting me for years and years. I've oficially had Warriors now for almost 2 months now--and it's wonderful! Ashe!

Thank you for the chance to reply. I am researching a book proposal on happiness and the great religions and wisdom traditions. I would like to include the traditions of Ifa and how happiness, joy and contentment are viewed from that perspective. Could someone get in touch with me to discuss this project? Thank you very much.
