Long Train to the Redeeming Sin: Stories About African Women
by Kola Boof

First let me say that it took me 3 weeks to find this amazing book! Amazon.com was not selling it at the time that I was searching for it and hearing a lot about it from friends at Howard University in D.C. It's a hard book to describe, because although the subtitle says "Stories About African Women", I thought it was really a book about "ALL" black women--everywhere in the world. It told their history and talked about very personal issues that traditionally and exlusively have belonged to sistas. I loved the book. It starts off in ancient times with a great story called "The Lioness", which shows how black women had to shape the humanity of men into any humanity at all--it also shows the unique beauty of our ancestral women. Then there's just one great story after the other--"Boy Magic", "Black America Diva Girl" (which by itself is worth the price of the book), "Own Me Night" (A truly SEXY story), "Nile River Bride", "Remember Son" (which made me cry), and "DAY OF VOW"--the final story, the longest one and the one that made me have nightmares for days!! I loved it. It's one hell of a book.

byanymeans.gif (12002 bytes)
Few men in American history are as controversial as Malcolm X. Even years after his assassination, Malcolm X continues to figure prominently in discussions about American race relations. In this provocative biography, Myers, winner of a Newbery Honor and four-time Coretta Scott King Award winner, presents a forthright portrait of a complex man whose life reflected the major events of our times.

RITES OF PASSAGE Psychology of Female Power
Ayobunmi Sangode

From the author of "The Cult of Sango" comes the new book "Rites of Passage, Psychology of Female Power". Author, lya Sangode examines and raises everyday female issues, while offering self-help techniques. Probably more important, lya Sangode presents various potent "female psychologies" culled from the Yoruba culture of Nigeria and West Africa. Researching deeply the sacred odus (Yoruba religious scriptures), Sangode draws the readers to the esteemed role of women and their profound position in the community as well as in some of the most powerful and important Yoruba societies and cults. Illustrations, Photograph, Index, 192pp.

"The Unseen Hand"; by Ralf Epperson
theunseenhand.gif (8932 bytes)

It is the contention of the author that the major events of the past, the wars, the depressions and the revolutions, have been planned years in advance by an international conspiracy. This view is called the Conspiratorial View of History, and is definitely not the view held by the majority of historians today. The more traditonal view is called The Accidental View of History, and it holds that no one really knows why events happen--they just do.

check.gif (1189 bytes)  "The Isis Papers"; by Frances Cress Welsing; Third World Press
isispapers.gif (7234 bytes)
We as black people have always known the effects of racism and discrimination(so has every other non-white person in the world), and it is a universally known fact that the major, if not the primary, cause of this continous problem has always been carried out by white people(esp.white men). But we as black people have never come to the full realization as to why the white man throughout history and to this day has carried out so many crimes and injustices against the colored peoples of the earth. Dr. Welsing breaks it down to the mental and physical fears that are sub-conciously known by the white collective. Amazing enough, they should also be known to the black collective. The truth was right there all along but we have been made so blind by the brainwashing of the pshycopathic racsist white man that we don't even realize it. It never even crossed my mind that white people are probaly albino mutants until I read this book; even though I was aware that albinism(a genetic defect of black people) and leprosy(evidence in the Bible) were the cause of white skin. Even more amazing was the fact that white people represent such a small minority on this earth's population and because of their genetic defection of skin whiteness they could as a race could be literally annihalated(genetically) from this earth if they reproduce offspring with non-whites. After reading this book, I had to hit myself over the head because it was so obvious. This book may not be very well recieved by many black people because it is so startling, but instead of ignoring it we must sit down and think, research the information, question everything we have learned throughout our lifetime, and evaluate. If not, we will continue to be decieved and oppressed. All credit to Dr. Welsing in trying to wake the black man's eyes up.

Revolution by the Book : (The Rap Is Live)
by Imam Jamil Al-Amin (H Rap Brown)

South Carolina Black Media Group, Sept. 2, 1993

Al-Amin thoroughly explains the principles of Islam and its role in the struggle against oppression . . . Many of the young African-Americans who are struggling for equality, idolize Al-Amin and choose to raise the consciousness of people through what is called rap music...reminiscent of his former nickname "Rap"...earned on the streets because of his mastery of the Black vernacular.
The Black Collegian, Jan.-Feb., 1994

. . . absolutely scintillating expression of controversial ideas by one so gifted in language to become known as "Rap" . . . Al-Amin is still using his gift . . . to call the people to action.
Muslim Journal, Sept. 3, 1993

. . . stresses that the [real] revolution begins within every individual [upon recognizing] the greatness of Allah as the Creator and Lord and [submitting] to His natural laws. . . universal, timeless truth which frees the mind and allows the soul to draw near its Creator.

SBA: The Reawakening of the African Mind
by Asa G., III Hilliard

"SBA: The Reawakening of the African Mind is a key. It is a roadmap. It is a call to destiny…. With SBA: The Reawakening of the African Mind, Dr. Hilliard…helps us to comprehend why education is so critical to African liberation and advancement. Within his opening thoughts, Asa inextricably links the mind (spirit), with culture and education. He notes that to reawaken the African mind, one must ensure that the goal of education, and the socialization process must be to understand and live up to African cultural principles, values and virtues.” --Wade W. Nobles, Ph.D. (From the Foreword)
Dr. Asa G. Hilliard, III is the Fuller E. Callaway Professor of Urban Education at Georgia State University. Dr. Hilliard is a noted educator, psychologist, and historian

"The Invention of Women : Making an African Sense of Western Gender Discourses"
by Oyeronke Oyewumi

The author traces the misapplication of Western, body-oriented concepts of gender through the history of gender discourses in Yoruba studies. THE INVENTION OF WOMEN demonstrates that biology as a rationale for organizing the social world is a Western construction not applicable in Yoruban culture where social organization was determined by relative age...
Oyewunmi goes into an area previously thought to be fully explored, and shatters all the presumptions in an indisputable fashion. The Yoruba 'woman' has been steeped in the image of her Western counterpart by people who never tried hard enough to find out her true roles and social functions in pre-colonial times. This book is written with a great deal of intuitiveness, depth and logic. It is painstakinly researched and thorough, yet imminently readable. It's the best book I've read in years.

"Behold a Pale White Horse"; by William Cooper
palehorse.gif (5136 bytes)
This was a very intriguing book that enlightened me, and definitely showed me the importance of knwing your Constitutional rights. William Cooper follows the tradition of many 20th century writers (like Orwell and Huxley)that warn about the dangerous of great power held in the hands of the elite...The thing that I found most interesting about the book is even if you decide the book is bull and take it as fiction, it still provides a powerful theme that can't go ignored. William Cooper in essence is saying, you as an American must learn and protect your god given constitutional rights because if you don't, who will?

Iceman Inheritance : Prehistoric Sources of Western Man's Racism, Sexism and Aggression
by Michael Bradley, John Henrik Clarke

I first read this book nearly 10 years ago, and am still amazed at its logical explanation about the aggressive behavior of white Europeans. Since my first reading of it, I have yet to find a more plausible theory about why a small group of nomadic people subsequently known as "whites" maintain such dominance over their women and persons with color. Bradley's book will be denounced by many, pooh-poohed by some, but I would challenge any of these persons to find a more relevant theory on the aggressive behavior of Caucasians. I recommend that it be read at least twice in order to grasp all of its meaning.

Message to the Blackman in America
by Elijah Muhammad

message to the black man is a great read for all black men in america. Elijah Muhammad speaks on race relations, (black on black and white on black), relationships and religion and many other topics that effect us all. This book was written in the 60's and still can be applied to todays life and society. it is amazing how someone with a third grade education (Elijah Muhammad) can write something that is so profound. This book was written over 20 years ago and even though things are so different now (but yet still the same) it can still be used as a helpful guide I recomend this groundbreaking book to anyone who is interested in the TRUTH!!!!!

The Debt : What America Owes to Blacks
by Randall Robinson

Randall Robinson, the founder and president of TransAfrica (a lobbying organization dedicated to influencing U.S. policy toward Africa and the Caribbean), recounted his heroic struggle to fight and overcome racism in the magnificent Defending the Spirit. In his triumphant follow-up, The Debt, he goes further than any previous black public figure in calling for reparations to African-Americans for the present-day racism that stems from 246 years of slavery. Citing compensation that Jews and Japanese Americans have received, he writes, "No race, ethnic or religious group has suffered as much over so long a span as blacks have and do still, at the hands of those who benefited ... from slavery and the century of legalized American racial hostility that followed it." In making his case, Robinson utilizes facts and figures that highlight the disparity between African-Americans and whites. While fully recognizing the monumental odds of this movement's success, Robinson feels that the push for reparations will also greatly benefit African-Americans in nonmaterial ways: "Even the making of a well-reasoned case for restitution will do wonders for the spirit of African-Americans," he argues. "It will cause them to at long last understand the genesis of their history--before, during, and after slavery--into one story of themselves." --Eugene Holley Jr

White by Law : The Legal Construction of Race
by Ian F. Haney Lopez

Lopez (U. of Wisconsin; U. of California-Berkeley) explores the social and legal origins of white racial identity, examining cases in America's past instrumental in forming contemporary conceptions of race, law, and whiteness. He traces the reasoning employed by the courts in their efforts to justify whiteness and nonwhiteness, revealing the criteria used up until 1952 to determine whiteness and thus suitability for citizenship, and looks at race relations today. Includes a list of cases and excerpts from selected cases. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland

Black Men : Obsolete, Single, Dangerous?
by Haki R. Madhubuti
This eloquent, yet hard-hitting book gives a blueprint, instructions and provocative reasoning behind why Black families are in crisis today, and most of his criticsm is leveled at the "men" in the Black community who have yet to step up to the plate and claim their rightful responsibilities in the home and in the world. In often humorous ways, Haki breaks down what the issues are, where the solutions lie and what we should demand of each other in our collective struggle (from our Black mates, children, leaders, etc.). He does all of this without being condescending or pious, but stern and loving, an accomplishment in itself, and I recommend this to any Black person commited to the struggle to make lives better for Blacks in this country as a whole, starting in their own backyards. If more Black men took these word to heart, the world would be a better place for all brothers and sisters. VITAL, CRUCIAL and NECESSARY!!!

Forced into Glory : Abraham Lincoln's White Dream
by Lerone, Jr Bennett
This is the most interesting book about Lincoln since Gore Vidal wrote his novel. Mr Bennett's Lincoln is not the familiar figure of Carl Sandburg's bio, but still believable. Bennett, author of Before The Mayflower, gives us a pragmatic, ambitious, scheming Politician. Lincoln apparently didn't care much for black people personally, enjoyed the racist humor of the time, and may have actually been a racist himself. Bennett makes a convincing case that Lincoln would rather have sent black slaves back to Africa instead of integrating them into post-Civil War society. This is a fascinating portrayal.

"It's About the money : The Fourth Movement of Freedom"; by Jessie, Sr Jackson, Jessie L., Jr. Jackson
allaboutmoney.gif (10188 bytes)
Reverend Jesse Jackson and his congressman son form the most powerful one-two punch for human rights. In It's About the Money! they take that fight from the police jails and picket lines to Wall Street and the wallet. In an era when many Americans think that playing the lottery is a surer bet than investing in the stock market, the Jacksons demystify the often confusing world of economics and empower the average citizen to achieve a more secure financial future. With information on money management, debt elimination, home mortgages, stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, the Jacksons provide the reader with the factual armor to guard against monetary uncertainties of the future. "Living in capitalism without understanding the role of money is like a fish that doesn't know how to navigate water," they write. "In our modern economy, capital is the equivalent of water to fields. With it comes the possibility of growth, without it little can survive." --Eugene Holley Jr.
